Sustainability
Bringing Great Food to Your Table, Responsibly
At Barrels & Basket, we believe good food should not only connect people with home and culture but should also be sourced, handled and delivered responsibly.
As a growing African grocery and food business, we are committed to developing practical and sustainable ways of working across our sourcing, packaging, food preparation and delivery operations.
Responsible Sourcing
We aim to work with reliable suppliers who understand the importance of quality, authenticity and responsible food handling.
Our focus is on sourcing genuine Nigerian and African foodstuffs, condiments, spices and ingredients while building long- term relationships with suppliers who can consistently meet our quality and food safety expectations.
As the business grows, we will continue to review our supply chain and look for opportunities to work with responsible producers, wholesalers and suppliers in the UK and overseas.
Reducing Food Waste
Food waste affects businesses, customers and the environment.
We aim to manage our stock carefully and use demand- led purchasing wherever practical to reduce unnecessary waste.
Our pre- order model for selected traditional meals and delicacies also allows us to prepare food based largely on confirmed customer demand rather than producing large quantities that may go unsold.
Where appropriate and safe, we will continue exploring practical ways of reducing avoidable food waste across our operations.
Smarter Packaging
Packaging is important for protecting food quality and safety, particularly when transporting African groceries, dried products, chilled products and prepared meals.
At the same time, we recognise the environmental impact that unnecessary packaging can have.
As our operations develop, we aim to:
Reduce unnecessary packaging where food safety and product protection allow. Explore recyclable, reusable or lower- impact packaging options where commercially and operationally practical. Select packaging appropriate to the product rather than using excessive materials. Encourage customers to recycle or responsibly dispose of packaging where possible.
Food safety, hygiene and product quality will always remain central to our packaging decisions.
Thoughtful Delivery
We aim to plan deliveries efficiently and work with suitable delivery partners as our customer base grows.
Where practical, consolidated deliveries, planned delivery schedules and appropriate packaging can help reduce unnecessary journeys while maintaining the quality and safety of customers' orders.
Supporting Communities
Barrels & Basket is built around more than selling groceries. African food represents culture, family, memories and connection.
By creating a trusted platform for authentic African food products, we hope to support producers, suppliers and other businesses connected to the African food supply chain while making traditional ingredients more accessible to communities across the UK.
Our Sustainability Journey
We recognise that sustainability is an ongoing journey, particularly for a growing business.
We will continue reviewing how we source products, manage waste, package orders and deliver to customers. As Barrels & Basket grows, our aim is to introduce measurable improvements that are practical, responsible and consistent with our commitment to quality and food safety.
Better choices today. A more sustainable Barrels & Basket tomorrow.
